The Serious Business of Cutting Grass

We live in trying times. Just opening the newspaper is a recipe for depression. Between The Trump Chump, The Dragon Lady and the lunatics at large in the world you'd wonder where we're headed. There is, however, one business about which we can rest easy --- the business of cutting grass.

Many people, when they move to Florida, dispense not only with snow shovels and woollen underwear but also with such household standards as work gloves, lawn mowers and hedge clippers, preferring to sit sipping cool beverages while watching paid minions do the actual sweating involved in growing and taming a lawn and garden in the heat of a Florida summer.

But not in this particular corner. Lest any of you were lying awake nights fretting about the care and minding of lawns hereabouts I thought I'd drop in to reassure you that all is well. The subject is getting top level attention. Meetings have been held, machines have been oiled, edges have been sharpened (you can resume breathing now.) The whole business is being taken care of, one blade at a time.

I know you are relieved to hear this and I am delighted to be the bearer of such joyful tidings.

You're welcome.

Sleep well.

On this side of the world we have (I hope) stopped mowing lawns for six months or so. Garden work continues. Or should continue.

You're too funny! That last picture is wonderful -- that would be my idea of a great retirement -- mow a little ... chat a lot. As for your opening statement -- it seems we're doing an amazing job of embarrassing ourselves on the world stage!

Oh the years I have spent (and wasted) trying to convince the gardener or should I say husband of mine to do away with the lawn and settle for a meadow, a sea of wild flowers that needs an afternoon with a scythe now and then. But now, little and often is the rule, i.e. weekly.

We have a gardener who mows our postage size yard, and then (more importantly) he trims flowers, etc. We feel that our time in flying grass is done.

John Deere! My Dad's favorite farm equipment. He always wore their caps--a new one every year, free of charge.

EC --- A change is as good as a rest. Enjoy the break....

MJ -- Glad to oblige!

Anna-Banana --- They say you're closer to God in a garden than any place else on earth. I think it's true for these two!

S&S --- Boo, hiss! Where's the fun in that?

Sabine --- I'm partial to meadows myself. But too close to the house? In Florida? I know snakes perform a useful function but long grass invites them to be cozy and I'd prefer they be cozy at a respectable distance....

SK --- Ah, flowers! We planted a bunch today. Fingers crossed they grow big and tall and smelling wonderful.

Great photo. How come both mowers ( machines that is ) are so clean? Never done any work? You should see how filthy ours get.
The politics we see on our TV make us wonder what Americans are thinking or are they?
Not a lot to pick from...the lesser of the evils!
Hugs from afar, Ali.

Whew....I was gasping a bit there! I have a similar picture except the ground Is white......VERY white, about a foot deep and the gentlemen in question are arrayed in various thick garments, one bearing a close resemblance to a prison outfit and the WT in his special snow blowing hat...but serious conversations are similarly afoot.

I'm clinging grimly to my British passport.......

AH --- Aha! You noticed! These machines are like valuable thoroughbreds, lovingly cooled down after each "event", brushed and combed, fed only the best oats, never put away gasping and wet. Nyquist would be envious....

As you've undoubtedly heard, numbskullery, idiocy, unbridled ambition, thievery and greed are all alive and well in our political system. Hence my feeble attempts to bring you some GOOD news.

Is NZ accepting American immigrants? Just curious. Although I still have an Irish passport.

Gillie --- We've absconded from the conditions you describe with no intentions of returning. But discussions with neighbors are equally valuable in either situation.

Goodness me, you're back! Welcome! Come again!

If you have Trump and we have Boris Johnson - I don't know if you know who he is but... sigh.
